Built into the Aurelian defensive circuit of the late 3rd century AD, the gate has been repaired and refashioned in later centuries and remained a named and ceremonial entry point to the city. It has featured in processional routes and urban improvements through the Renaissance and modern periods.
Sited at the northern edge of central Rome, opening onto Piazza del Popolo and providing access from roads coming from the north.
