Porta Carmentalis

Porta Carmentalis is an ancient gate associated with Rome’s early city walls and the approaches near the Tiber and the Forum Boarium. The name recalls the Roman goddess Carmenta and the gate’s role in access to low-lying riverfront areas.

What remains today are archaeological traces and incorporated masonry rather than a complete freestanding gate; the location is of interest to those studying Rome’s original access points and early topography.
