Porta Asinaria

Porta Asinaria is an ancient city gate in Rome, incorporated into the Aurelian Walls constructed in the late 3rd century AD. The gate survives as a combination of Roman walling with later medieval modifications.

The structure presents visible phases of construction from the imperial period through the Middle Ages, and it stands adjacent to modern streets in Rome’s southern sector. Although not a large tourist site, it is of interest to those tracing the city’s defensive architecture and urban development.

Erected with the Aurelian Walls in the late 3rd century AD, the gate has been altered and repaired in later centuries, particularly in the medieval period when many of Rome’s gates were fortified or adapted. It has continued to stand as part of the city’s historic fabric through modern times.

The gate is located on Rome’s southern perimeter within the historic city, near the Baths of Caracalla and the Lateran area, and is visible from nearby streets that follow the line of the ancient walls.
