Porta Ardeatina

Porta Ardeatina is an historic city gate in Rome located on the southern section of the ancient walls, adjacent to Via Ardeatina. It functions as a tangible remainder of Rome’s fortified perimeter and the road network that led out of the city.

The gate itself is a modest structure compared with Rome’s grander gates; it is typically seen from the adjoining street rather than as a destination with an extensive visitor circuit. Photographers and walkers often note its relationship to the stretch of ancient walls that extend on either side.

Originally constructed as an entrance in Rome’s defensive wall system in antiquity, the gateway has been repaired and altered in later centuries as the walls and surrounding streets were modified.
