Port, Fortresses and Group of Monuments, Cartagena

The Port, Fortresses and Group of Monuments of Cartagena are the fortified historic core of Cartagena de Indias on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its extensive defensive works and colonial urban fabric. The ensemble includes the city’s masonry walls, bastions and major fortresses built to protect the port and town.

Within the complex are long stretches of city walls, raised bastions and defensive platforms, the large hilltop Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, and a compact historic centre of plazas, churches and civic buildings. Walkable circuits around the walls and through the old town display 16th to 18th-century Spanish colonial military and civil architecture.

Spanish colonial authorities began constructing the port defences and urban monuments from the 16th century onward in response to maritime threats; the works were expanded and modified over the 17th and 18th centuries as the port’s strategic importance grew. The fortifications and historic buildings have been preserved and restored in the modern era and are a focus of heritage conservation.

The site sits on the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia in Bolívar Department, at the port city of Cartagena. The walled city and fortresses occupy the historic peninsula and adjacent hills above the bay and harbour, with modern Cartagena extending beyond the preserved core.
