Port-Cros
Island Mediterranean island and national park off French Riviera
An island in the Hyères archipelago protected as part of Port-Cros National Park; visitors come for coastal trails, snorkeling in protected waters and limited development that keeps beaches relatively quiet.
Port-Cros is a small island in the Îles d’Hyères off the French Mediterranean coast and forms part of the Port-Cros National Park. The island is notable for its protected terrestrial and marine areas and limited development.
On the island visitors find a compact harbour and village, short coastal trails, small pebble beaches and clear, protected waters for snorkelling and diving. The custodial management of the island emphasizes conservation so facilities are intentionally modest and outdoor recreation is the main draw.
Port-Cros became a legally protected area in the 20th century and is administered as a national park and marine reserve to conserve its habitats and species. The island has seen limited permanent settlement compared with nearby islands, and much of its land is maintained for conservation and low-impact tourism.
Geographically the island lies off the coast of Hyères in southeastern France, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, and is reached by short ferry trips from main ports on the mainland.
- Visitor conditions: The island is largely car-free and managed for conservation, so visitor facilities are limited and day visits are common while overnight options are restricted.
- Recreation highlights: Clear coastal water and protected reefs make the surrounding sea a popular location for snorkelling and scuba diving, with marked trails on land for short hikes through Mediterranean maquis.
What to See #
- Port-Cros village and harbour: A small harbour and the island's only settlement area, containing visitor facilities and the mooring point for boats that bring day visitors from the mainland.
- National park and marine reserve: A protected terrestrial and marine reserve established in the mid-20th century that covers much of the island and surrounding waters, providing marked hiking paths through maquis shrubland and a no-take marine zone popular with snorkellers and divers.
How to Get to Port-Cros #
Port-Cros is an island in the Îles d’Hyères (off the French Riviera) and is reached only by boat. Ferries and private-boat services run seasonally from ports such as Hyères/Le Port, La Londe-les-Maures and Le Lavandou-check local operators for timetables; crossings vary by departure point but are typically on the order of tens of minutes to around an hour. If driving to the ferry, Hyères is the nearest mainland town.
Tips for Visiting Port-Cros #
- Catch one of the first ferries of the day from Hyères or Le Lavandou so you have maximum time ashore on Port-Cros and the clearest water for snorkeling before midday boat traffic increases.
- Remember the island is a national park with no cars - plan to explore on foot and stick to marked trails and protected coves, where underwater visibility and marine life are best preserved.
- Avoid July-August if you can; visiting midweek outside peak summer will give you quieter trails and beaches, and make it easier to get a ferry back at your preferred time.
Best Time to Visit Port-Cros #
Best visited in late spring or early autumn for good sea conditions, hiking and fewer summer crowds.
