Port-aux-Français Travel Guide

City Main research station and administrative base on Kerguelen

The Kerguelen research base is the rare stop for expedition passengers: volcanic shorelines, kelp-flung beaches, elephant seals and albatrosses, and a handful of scientific huts that map weather and penguin colonies.

Best Time to Visit Port-aux-Français #

The only realistic time to visit Port-aux-Français is the short austral summer (December-February) when conditions are least severe and wildlife is most accessible. Outside that window, storms, sea ice and wind make travel extremely difficult.

Summer
December - February · 0-6°C (32-43°F)
Short austral summer offers milder temperatures, more daylight, and accessible wildlife colonies - the only practical window for scientists and visitors.
Autumn
March - May · -1-4°C (30-39°F)
Storm frequency increases, seas get rougher and access becomes unreliable; expect chilly, windy conditions and rapidly shortening research opportunities period.
Winter
June - August · -8-2°C (18-36°F)
Brutally cold, stormy and often sea-ice bound; travel nearly impossible, with strong winds and freezing temperatures that limit all visitor activity to essential operations.

How to Get to Port-aux-Français

Port-aux-Français is extremely remote and reached almost exclusively by ship from Réunion; there are no standard commercial flights. Travel requires advance coordination with French scientific/logistical operators.

By Air

No regular commercial airport: Port-aux-Français (Kerguelen) has no regular commercial air service for tourists. There are occasional logistical or military flights, but these are not normal public connections.

Réunion (Roland Garros, RUN): The only practical entry point for most travellers is Réunion (Roland Garros Airport, RUN). From Réunion onward access to Kerguelen is by the French research/resupply ship Marion Dufresne; there are no scheduled passenger flights from Réunion to Kerguelen.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no rail access to Kerguelen; the islands are remote subantarctic territory without a public rail network.

Ship / Boat: The Marion Dufresne supplies Port-aux-Français from Réunion on irregular scheduled voyages that carry researchers and occasional paying passengers. The voyage takes around 10-14 days depending on weather and routing, and travel must be arranged through the French research authorities or authorised agents; fares and berthing availability are managed case-by-case and are typically expensive.

How to Get Around Port-aux-Français #

Port-aux-Français is a remote research station rather than a tourist town; movement is mostly on foot around the base and by all-terrain vehicles for fieldwork. Travel to and from the station is by ship or research aircraft on scheduled expeditions, not regular public transport. There are no public taxis or bike-share services - if you visit with an expedition follow the station’s guidance and bring appropriate gear and warm, waterproof clothing.
