Port-aux-Français Travel Guide
City Main research station and administrative base on Kerguelen
The Kerguelen research base is the rare stop for expedition passengers: volcanic shorelines, kelp-flung beaches, elephant seals and albatrosses, and a handful of scientific huts that map weather and penguin colonies.
Why Visit Port-aux-Français? #
Visiting Port-aux-Français is for travelers seeking extreme remoteness, scientific history and raw sub-Antarctic wildlife. The French research station and the island’s seal colonies, albatross rookeries and basaltic shorelines offer singular encounters far from regular tourism. Summer trips can include zodiac outings to observe elephant seals and skuas close to shore. Expect expedition-style logistics and long daylight in summer; the setting rewards those interested in wildlife observation and polar research context.

Ship / Boat: The Marion Dufresne supplies Port-aux-Français from Réunion on irregular scheduled voyages that carry researchers and occasional paying passengers. The voyage takes around 10-14 days depending on weather and routing, and travel must be arranged through the French research authorities or authorised agents; fares and berthing availability are managed case-by-case and are typically expensive.
