Poros is a small Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, administratively part of the Attica region, known for its compact harbour town and pine-covered hills. It functions as a local tourist and weekend destination with beaches, waterfront cafés and moderate visitor infrastructure.

The town is built around a narrow channel and natural harbour, with a hilltop clock tower and a mix of neoclassical and island-style buildings; small beaches and bays are distributed along the shoreline. The island is often used for short cruises, day trips and as a base for exploring nearby Saronic islands.

Poros has been inhabited since antiquity and has a maritime and fishing tradition; over time it developed as a small commercial and ferry hub for the surrounding islands and mainland. Tourism and boating became significant activities in the 20th century.

Geographically the island lies in the Saronic Gulf close to the northeastern Peloponnese and is separated from the mainland town of Galatas by a narrow channel. It is reached by ferry services from ports serving the Athens region and neighbouring islands.

  • Town centre: The island's main settlement is a compact harbour town centred on a natural bay with a distinctive clock tower on a hill above the quay.
  • Connections: Regular ferry connections link the island to the Peloponnese mainland at Galatas and to ports serving Athens and the Saronic Gulf, making it a short island hop from the mainland.

How to Get to Poros #

Poros is an island reachable by ferry from the ports of Piraeus (Athens) and from the Peloponnese town of Galatas opposite the island. From central Athens drive to Piraeus (about 30-40 km, roughly 40-60 minutes depending on traffic) and take a conventional ferry or hydrofoil to Poros (frequencies vary; crossings typically take about 1-1.5 hours by conventional ferry or less by hydrofoil). Ferries arrive at Poros town harbour, a short 2-5 minute walk into the town centre.

Tips for Visiting Poros #

  • Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the big day‑trip crowds from nearby Galatas and Piraeus; many day visitors leave after lunch so evenings are calmer.
  • If you're coming from the mainland, take the short Galatas-Poros car/foot ferry rather than the larger Piraeus hydrofoils - the crossing is frequent and drops you right by Poros town's waterfront.
  • Climb the town clock tower (Hora) for the best panoramic view of both Poros islands; most people stay along the main waterfront and miss the narrow backstreets and lookout paths above the town.

Best Time to Visit Poros #

Visit Poros in late spring or early autumn to enjoy warm weather and fewer day-trip crowds than peak summer.
