Porolissum
Archaeological Site Roman archaeological site and former provincial capital
Porolissum preserves a Roman frontier town with gates, defensive walls and an amphitheatre; the archaeological park and small museum attract those interested in Roman Dacia and on-site excavations.
Porolissum is the ruins of a Roman frontier city and military camp in northwestern Romania, established in the early 2nd century AD as a strategic base for Roman Dacia. The site functioned as both a castrum and a civic settlement on the empire’s northern frontier.
Today the archaeological park presents exposed foundations, reconstructed sections of the monumental gate, visible remains of the defensive system and an amphitheatre. The site is interpreted with on-site displays and a visitor centre that explain its role in Roman frontier administration and local trade.
Porolissum was established around 106 AD and was occupied during the Antonine and Severan periods when the frontier system in this region was active. Archaeological work over the 20th and 21st centuries has documented its military architecture and civilian layout.
The ruins lie in Sălaj County in northwestern Romania, set in rolling hills north of the county seat and within driving distance of regional towns; the site is accessed by local roads from the nearby settlements and regional highways.
