Populonia is an ancient Etruscan and Roman settlement on a coastal promontory in Tuscany, Italy, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti. It is notable for its archaeological park, which includes the acropolis, urban remains, and extensive necropoleis from the Etruscan period.
The site offers terraces and ruins on the headland, stone-built remains of the ancient town, and funerary areas with rock-cut and mound tombs; visitors typically combine museum displays with on-site remains and coastal viewpoints. The setting on the bay gives clear evidence of the town’s maritime and industrial role in antiquity.
Populonia developed as an Etruscan center from the 7th century BC, important for iron-working and maritime trade, and continued to be occupied in Roman and later medieval periods. Archaeological investigation over the 19th and 20th centuries has revealed settlement layouts, necropoleis, and remains of industrial activity related to iron processing.
