Populonia is an ancient Etruscan and Roman settlement on a coastal promontory in Tuscany, Italy, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti. It is notable for its archaeological park, which includes the acropolis, urban remains, and extensive necropoleis from the Etruscan period.

The site offers terraces and ruins on the headland, stone-built remains of the ancient town, and funerary areas with rock-cut and mound tombs; visitors typically combine museum displays with on-site remains and coastal viewpoints. The setting on the bay gives clear evidence of the town’s maritime and industrial role in antiquity.

Populonia developed as an Etruscan center from the 7th century BC, important for iron-working and maritime trade, and continued to be occupied in Roman and later medieval periods. Archaeological investigation over the 19th and 20th centuries has revealed settlement layouts, necropoleis, and remains of industrial activity related to iron processing.

The site sits on a headland in the municipality of Piombino, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti on the Tuscan coast. The nearest towns are Piombino and the resort areas along the Tyrrhenian shore; access is by road from the local coastal roads and regional centers.

  • Archaeological park: The archaeological park combines visible remains in the hilltop settlement with extensive necropoleis that document Etruscan occupation from the 7th century BC onward.

  • Necropolis of San Cerbone: A large Etruscan necropolis with rock-cut tombs and burial mounds is set inland from the town and forms part of the archaeological park protecting funerary monuments dated mainly to the Iron Age and Archaic periods.
  • Baratti Bay and shore: The coastal area and bay of Baratti contain archaeological remains and a small beach; the bay is adjacent to the archaeological park and provides the maritime setting for Populonia's ancient industrial activities.
