Pontigny Abbey

Pontigny Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in Burgundy, France, founded in 1114 and known as one of the early and important daughter houses of Cîteaux. The site retains substantial medieval church and monastic structures and is recognised for its architectural coherence.

The surviving abbey church and cloister provide clear examples of Cistercian monastic architecture from the 12th century, with large, austere spaces and surviving medieval masonry. Visitors can walk parts of the monastic ranges and see vaulted rooms and structural features that illustrate communal monastic life.

Founded in 1114, Pontigny became a major Cistercian house and founded other monasteries; it played a significant role in the religious and economic life of medieval Burgundy. The abbey was dissolved during the French Revolution and later conserved as a historic monument; much of the medieval fabric survives and has been subject to preservation.

Pontigny Abbey stands in the Yonne department of Burgundy (today the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region), in a rural setting north of Auxerre, surrounded by agricultural land and small villages.
