Ponte Sisto

Ponte Sisto is a 15th-century stone bridge in Rome that spans the Tiber and connects the Trastevere district with the historic centre. It was completed under Pope Sixtus IV in 1473 and remains a well-known river crossing in central Rome.

The bridge is a short, single-span masonry structure used primarily by pedestrians; it links the Piazza Trilussa area in Trastevere with the rione on the east bank and provides direct access to sites near Campo de’ Fiori. The bridge deck and river views make it a popular route for walkers and photographers, particularly in the evening.

The present bridge was built by order of Pope Sixtus IV in 1473 to replace an earlier medieval crossing and to improve access for pilgrims and city traffic. It has been repaired and maintained repeatedly since the 15th century but retains its Renaissance-era profile and masonry.

Ponte Sisto stands in central Rome crossing the Tiber a short walk from Piazza Trilussa on the Trastevere side and close to the central historic districts on the opposite bank. It is within easy walking distance of many central Rome landmarks and transit stops.

• Distinctive feature: Look for the large central oculus in the arch - it was included to reduce hydraulic pressure during floods and is a visible feature from the riverbanks.
