Ponte Sant'Angelo
Archaeological Site Historic Roman pedestrian bridge to Castel Sant'Angelo
A pedestrian span over the Tiber leading to Castel Sant’Angelo, Ponte Sant’Angelo features baroque angel sculptures and offers river views; visitors cross for photography and the short walk between historic Rome and the Vatican.
Ponte Sant’Angelo is a historic stone bridge in Rome that spans the Tiber and provides a direct route to the fortress known as Castel Sant’Angelo. It was originally built to link the city with the emperor’s mausoleum across the river.
The bridge is noted for its Baroque angel statues mounted along the parapets, a set conceived in the 17th century and widely associated with Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Today the bridge functions primarily for pedestrians and is a popular crossing for people visiting the Vatican area.
Built in ancient Roman times to connect the city with the mausoleum that later became Castel Sant’Angelo, the bridge has been repaired and embellished across the centuries and acquired its Baroque statuary in the 1600s. It has long served both ceremonial and practical purposes as a river crossing.
The bridge sits immediately east of the Vatican and links the historic centre near Piazza Navona with the fortress on the river’s right bank, within easy walking distance of St. Peter’s Basilica.
- Pedestrian access: The bridge is now restricted to pedestrians, offering direct access between the historic centre and the riverfront fortress.
What to See #
- Bernini's angels: A series of ten Baroque angel sculptures placed along the bridge parapets, designed in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and largely executed by his pupils.
How to Get to Ponte Sant'Angelo #
Ponte Sant’Angelo sits in central Rome next to Castel Sant’Angelo on the Tiber. From Rome Metro line A, get off at Ottaviano or Lepanto and walk about 10-15 minutes along Via Cola di Rienzo and Lungotevere to the bridge; it’s also an easy 10-15 minute walk from St. Peter’s Square. By road it is in the historic centre (within a couple of kilometres of Roma Termini/Piazza Venezia) - expect restricted traffic (ZTL) close to the bridge.
Tips for Visiting Ponte Sant'Angelo #
- Go very early (shortly after sunrise) or late evening to enjoy strong views of St. Peter's Basilica across the river with far fewer people and better light for photos.
- Approach the bridge from the Castel Sant'Angelo side to combine the walk with the castle esplanade and to avoid the busiest tourist flows coming from Piazza Navona.
- Pause in the middle of the bridge to study the Bernini-era angel sculptures and the carved parapets-many visitors hurry across without noticing the individual sculptural details and inscriptions.
