Pons Sublicius
Archaeological Site Legendary ancient wooden Roman bridge near Tiber's banks
Pons Sublicius marks the legendary site of Rome’s earliest wooden bridge on the Tiber; visitors study its history while walking riverside paths toward the Forum and Capitoline Hill.
Pons Sublicius was the earliest known bridge across the Tiber in ancient Rome, traditionally constructed of wood and maintained for defensive reasons. It occupies the site of the modern Ponte Sublicio near the Forum Boarium.
The bridge is famed in Roman tradition for episodes such as the defense by Horatius Cocles and for its role in early Roman military and religious practice. No original wooden structure survives; knowledge comes from ancient writers and later reconstructions.
Over time the original wooden bridge was replaced by successive stone and metal crossings as the city developed; the present-day crossing at the site is a modern bridge that commemorates the ancient name and location.
Pons Sublicius stood at a narrow stretch of the Tiber by the foot of the Aventine Hill and the Forum Boarium, linking that area to the Trastevere riverbank.
- Construction: The original bridge was entirely wooden and is known primarily from Roman historical accounts and legends rather than surviving fabric.
