Poloniny National Park is a remote protected area in northeastern Slovakia established to conserve extensive mountain forests and traditional highland pastures in the Prešov Region. The park is particularly important for its large tracts of near-natural beech forest and biodiversity.

Old-growth beech forests, mountain meadows (poloniny) and mixed woodland form the core attractions; trails lead to ridge viewpoints, forest reserves and small hamlets. The park is prized by hikers, naturalists and those seeking relatively undisturbed Carpathian ecosystems, with opportunities to see large mammals and specialist forest birds.

The national park was created to protect the easternmost reaches of Slovak forested highlands and the area’s primeval forest patches; several of those reserves were later inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for primeval beech forests. Park management focuses on habitat protection, low-impact tourism and conservation of traditional rural landscapes.

Poloniny lies in Slovakia’s far northeast near the town of Snina and the border with Poland and Ukraine, occupying a hilly, forested region of the Outer Eastern Carpathians with scattered villages and mountain ridges.

  • UNESCO beech forests: Several forest reserves in the park form part of the UNESCO Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians World Heritage property, protecting old-growth beech stands.
  • Hiking highlight: A marked hiking network reaches ridge viewpoints and the Kremenec tripoint, where three national borders meet at about 1,221 m elevation.

What to See #

  • Stužica, Havešová and Rožok: A cluster of primeval beech forest reserves included in the UNESCO World Heritage serial property, noted for old-growth stands and native ecology.
  • Kremenec tripoint: Kremenec (also spelled Kremenets) is a forested summit at the Slovak-Polish-Ukrainian tripoint, reaching about 1,221 metres and popular with hikers seeking the border marker.

How to Get to Poloniny National Park #

Poloniny National Park is best reached by car from the nearby towns of Snina or Humenné; expect a rural drive on regional roads into the park area (travel times vary, roughly tens of kilometres from those towns). The nearest railway station with regional connections is Snina - from there local buses, taxis or private transfers serve villages at the park edge (for example Nová Sedlica), and most trailheads are reached on short walks of under a few kilometres from those village stops.

Tips for Visiting Poloniny National Park #

  • Aim for early morning or late afternoon hikes in spring-autumn for the best light, quieter trails and higher chances of spotting wildlife; many trails can be foggy or wet at midday after rain.
  • Use the small eastern gateway villages such as Nová Sedlica or Zboj as trailheads - they are the common access points into the park's deeper forests and avoid long drives on rough secondary roads.
  • Respect the protected primeval beech forest reserves (parts of the Primeval Beech Forests UNESCO site) by staying on marked trails and observing signage; sections are ecologically sensitive and should not be entered off-path.
  • Be prepared for limited services and spotty mobile coverage in the remote parts of Poloniny; check opening hours of any local information centres before you set out and tell someone your route if you're heading into the backcountry.
