Pollino National Park
Park Southern Italy national park noted for gorges and biodiversity
Pollino National Park spans Basilicata and Calabria with rugged mountains, Bosnian pine stands and karst terrain; hikers, canyoners and rural tourism seekers use trails, rafting sections and small mountain towns as bases.
Pollino National Park is a protected area in southern Italy that straddles the regions of Basilicata and Calabria. It was established in 1993 and is one of Italy’s largest national parks.
The park contains mountain massifs with slopes that rise above 2,200 metres, extensive karst plateaus, river gorges and mixed beech and pine forests. Notable natural highlights include ancient stands of Bosnian pine and deep canyons such as the Raganello Gorge that attract hikers and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
The park was created to conserve local biodiversity and traditional pastoral landscapes and to regulate use of the massif for grazing, forestry and recreation. Management since the 1990s has focused on habitat protection and visitor access across multiple municipalities.
Geographically the park sits on the Pollino massif on the border between Basilicata and Calabria in southern Italy, covering a broad, mountainous area between the provincial centres of Potenza and Cosenza.
- Establishment: Park management covers parts of both Basilicata and Calabria and was established to protect the massif's biodiversity in 1993.
- Best season: Best time for high-elevation hiking is late spring through early autumn when trails above the treeline are generally free of snow.
