Poilvache Castle

Poilvache Castle is a medieval fortified complex on a rocky outcrop above the River Meuse near Yvoir in Wallonia, Belgium, known for its extensive ruined walls and strategic riverside position.

Remains on site include stretches of curtain wall, tower fragments and defensive terraces that follow the promontory; the ruins and the river below are the main attractions for walkers and history visitors. Paths allow a circuit of the site and viewpoints over the Meuse valley.

Originally developed in the medieval period as a fortified settlement taking advantage of the promontory, the complex was occupied and modified over centuries before falling into ruin. Archaeological traces reflect defensive and domestic phases from the Middle Ages.

The ruins sit directly above the River Meuse in the Namur province, close to the village of Yvoir; the site is accessed from local roads with short footpaths from the riverside parking and picnic areas.

• Visitor access: Good riverside viewpoints and a short steep walk bring you up onto the ruins; footwear for uneven stone and loose gravel is recommended.
