Podocarpus National Park

Podocarpus National Park is a protected area in southern Ecuador, established by the Ecuadorian state in 1982 to conserve high-biodiversity Andean ecosystems. It is noted for extensive cloud forest and high-altitude páramo habitats.

The park offers a network of trails, waterfalls, and birdwatching opportunities across montane forest and upland grasslands. Hiking routes range from short nature walks to multi-day treks into remote valleys, and the area is important for endemic orchids and bird species.

The park was created to protect watersheds and the rich flora and fauna of the eastern and western Andean slopes. Management has focused on combining conservation with regulated tourism and community involvement since its founding.

Podocarpus lies in southern Ecuador in and around Loja Province, on the eastern flank of the Andes and bordering adjacent highland provinces. The nearest regional city is Loja, which is the usual base for visits.
