Podhale is a cultural and geographic region in southern Poland at the northern edge of the Tatra Mountains, within Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is the heartland of the Polish highlanders, known locally as the Górale, and a centre for mountain tourism.
The area offers alpine and subalpine landscapes, marked hiking routes, winter ski areas and a strong vernacular architecture and folk tradition; towns and mountain cottages make it a year-round destination for outdoor activities. Visitors commonly combine mountain walks or climbs with visits to highland museums, open-air markets and wooden churches.
Podhale developed as a pastoral and mountain-settlement region with distinct local customs and economy based historically on shepherding, forestry and mountain trade. Over the 19th and 20th centuries it became increasingly important as a tourist and mountaineering destination.
Geographically it sits in the southernmost part of Poland along the border with Slovakia, with Zakopane the principal town at the foot of the High Tatras and Nowy Targ serving the surrounding valleys. The area is about 100 kilometres south of Kraków.

How to Get to Podhale #
Podhale is the Tatra foothills region around Nowy Targ and Zakopane in southern Poland. The common gateway is Kraków-Zakopane is about 100 km south of Kraków along the main Zakopianka road (national road DK47). There are frequent coaches and direct PKP trains from Kraków Główny to Zakopane; from Zakopane or Nowy Targ you can access villages and trails throughout Podhale by local bus, taxi or on foot.
Tips for Visiting Podhale #
- Use Zakopane as your practical base for exploring Podhale; many of the main trailheads and Tatra National Park entrances (for example Kuźnice) start from there and are well served by local buses.
- To avoid the biggest crowds around Morskie Oko, consider the Chochołowska Valley and other lesser-used valleys for similar scenery and traditional highland culture; these routes tend to be quieter, especially on weekdays.
- Most visitors focus on the town center-make time to visit nearby villages and open-air wooden churches to see Podhale's traditional architecture and folk culture that many tourists miss.
