Podhale is a cultural and geographic region in southern Poland at the northern edge of the Tatra Mountains, within Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is the heartland of the Polish highlanders, known locally as the Górale, and a centre for mountain tourism.

The area offers alpine and subalpine landscapes, marked hiking routes, winter ski areas and a strong vernacular architecture and folk tradition; towns and mountain cottages make it a year-round destination for outdoor activities. Visitors commonly combine mountain walks or climbs with visits to highland museums, open-air markets and wooden churches.

Podhale developed as a pastoral and mountain-settlement region with distinct local customs and economy based historically on shepherding, forestry and mountain trade. Over the 19th and 20th centuries it became increasingly important as a tourist and mountaineering destination.

Geographically it sits in the southernmost part of Poland along the border with Slovakia, with Zakopane the principal town at the foot of the High Tatras and Nowy Targ serving the surrounding valleys. The area is about 100 kilometres south of Kraków.

  • Local culture: Traditional highland culture remains visible in music, dress and cuisine - try the smoked sheep's cheese known as oscypek sold at markets and mountain huts.
  • Main visitor hub: Zakopane functions as the primary base for visitors to the Polish Tatras and has the highest concentration of mountain tourism services in the region.

What to See #

  • Zakopane: A mountain resort town that serves as the main tourist gateway to the Tatra Mountains, with year-round skiing, hiking trails and a concentration of highland culture and architecture.
  • Tatra foothills and trails: The Polish side of the Tatra mountain range, containing high peaks, marked hiking routes and alpine lakes that form the outdoor core of the region.
  • Nowy Targ: A historic market town and local service centre that hosts regional fairs and acts as a transport hub for the surrounding highland communities.
