Pocitos Stadium was a small football ground in the Pocitos neighbourhood of Montevideo, Uruguay, notable for staging matches during the 1930 FIFA World Cup. It is historically associated with the tournament’s first-ever goal.
The ground was compact and intimate compared with larger Montevideo venues of the period, and it hosted at least one match during the inaugural World Cup where the competition’s first goal was recorded. The original stadium was eventually demolished and the location has since been redeveloped with a plaque marking the pitch outline.
Its use declined as larger modern stadiums were built in Montevideo and club football shifted to other venues. The site remains a point of football-historical interest for visitors and scholars.
Located in the Pocitos district of Montevideo, the former stadium site lies within the city’s residential and commercial fabric along the southern shore of the Río de la Plata.
- Historical note: The stadium is remembered as the venue where the first goal in FIFA World Cup history was scored in 1930 by France's Lucien Laurent. The original ground was later demolished and the site is now a residential area marked with a commemorative plaque showing the old pitch outline.
How to Get to Pocitos Stadium #
Estadio Pocitos is in the Pocitos neighbourhood of Montevideo on the city’s seafront. From downtown Montevideo or Tres Cruces bus terminal it’s a short taxi or city-bus ride (around 3-5 km) east along the seaside avenues; you can also walk from nearby parts of Pocitos along the Rambla. The area is served by Montevideo’s local buses and taxis/ride-hail services.

- Note that Estadio Pocitos no longer exists as a functioning stadium; the site in the Pocitos neighborhood of Montevideo is marked by a commemorative plaque, so visit during daylight to see the marker and the surrounding residential streets.
- Combine a visit to the plaque with a stroll along nearby Avenida Brasil and the Rambla (beachfront); the area is best reached on foot or by a short taxi ride from central Montevideo rather than expecting stadium facilities.
