Plovdiv Roman theatre

The Plovdiv Roman theatre is an ancient stone theatre located in Plovdiv’s Old Town, originally constructed in the Roman period, broadly dated to the 1st century AD. It was built into the slope of the hill and retains a semicircular cavea and a well-preserved stage area.

The structure seats several thousand spectators in its original arrangement and has been restored so it can host concerts and theatrical events in the present day. Its combination of archaeological preservation and active cultural programming makes it a central landmark in Plovdiv’s historic district.

After falling out of use in the medieval period the theatre was partly buried and then systematically excavated and conserved in the 20th century, allowing restoration of seating and stage features. Since restoration it has been used regularly for performances and festivals, echoing its ancient role.

The theatre sits in Plovdiv’s Old Town on a hillside within walking distance of the modern city centre and other Roman and medieval remains; the site overlooks narrow historic streets and is integrated into the city’s tourist circuit.
