Plomb du Cantal
Mountain Extinct volcanic summit and highest point in Cantal
Volcanic peak in the Auvergne massif reached by long summer hikes and winter snowshoe routes. Walkers come for old volcanic domes, pastureland and broad central‑France panoramas.
Plomb du Cantal is the highest summit in the Cantal massif in central France and a prominent peak within the Massif Central volcanic region. It stands above the surrounding volcanic terrain and is the principal high point of the department.
Hikers and outdoor visitors use marked trails to reach the summit for panoramic views across the Cantal highlands and neighbouring parts of the Massif Central. The slopes are characterised by open pastures and volcanic landforms rather than dense forest.
The peak is part of an ancient volcanic complex formed during volcanic activity in the Massif Central; over geological time the original volcanic cone has been shaped by erosion into the current summit area. Human use has historically been pastoral and recreational rather than industrial.
Located in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in central France, the summit sits within the Cantal department and is accessible from nearby mountain towns that serve as trailheads.
- Altitude: Summit altitude approximately 1,855 metres, making it the highest point of the Cantal massif and a common hiking objective in the region.
