Plaza Dorrego

Plaza Dorrego is a historic public square in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires known for its preserved 19th-century buildings and cobbled streets. It is one of the neighborhood’s primary public spaces and a center for antiques and cultural activity.

The square is best known for its weekend antique market and frequent outdoor tango demonstrations and street musicians. Small cafes and bars line the plaza and the surrounding Defensa street, making it a compact area for shopping, dining, and watching performances. The atmosphere is busiest on Sundays when vendors, tourists, and locals converge on the square.

San Telmo developed during the colonial and early national periods of Buenos Aires, and Plaza Dorrego became surrounded by residential and commercial buildings in the 19th century; many of those structures survive and give the square its historic character.
