Plaza del Obradoiro
Plaza Cathedral square serving as Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage terminus
The cathedral square at Santiago de Compostela, Plaza del Obradoiro is the Camino’s end point. Pilgrims and tourists gather before the cathedral façade and the stone steps that mark arrival.
Plaza del Obradoiro is the principal square in front of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia and marks the traditional terminus of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. It is the focal point of the city’s historic centre and surrounded by important public and ecclesiastical buildings.
The plaza opens directly onto the cathedral’s western façade and serves as the arrival space for pilgrims; on busy pilgrimage days hundreds to thousands of walkers can be present. The square is flanked by the medieval-styled Hostal dos Reis Católicos (now a historic hotel), the neoclassical Pazo de Raxoi which houses municipal offices, and collegiate buildings that complete the formal ensemble.
Construction of the cathedral began in the medieval period and the square evolved as the urban space in front of the west façade; surrounding buildings were added and refurbished across later centuries to form the current ensemble. The square’s role as the end point of the Camino and as a civic and religious gathering place has continued into the present day.
Plaza del Obradoiro sits in the heart of Santiago de Compostela’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, immediately west of the cathedral. The square is pedestrianised and lies within the compact historic core of the city.
- Best viewpoint: The western steps of the cathedral are the most popular vantage point for photographing the square and for witnessing pilgrim arrivals.
- Peak times: Pilgrim groups often arrive in the late morning and early afternoon, making those times especially busy and atmospherically significant.
What to See #
- Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela: Faces the western entrance of the cathedral and is the traditional arrival point for pilgrims completing the Camino de Santiago, forming the square's dominant architectural focus.
- Hostal dos Reis Católicos: A late-medieval foundation converted into a royal hospital and now operates as a historic luxury hotel and cultural building directly on the square's east side.
- Pazo de Raxoi (Town Hall): A formal civic building on the north side of the square that houses local government offices, with a stone façade that frames the plaza.
- Colegio de San Xerome: Historic collegiate building on the square, historically connected with university and ecclesiastical education and contributing to the ensemble around the plaza.
