Main image

Plaza de España in Madrid is a large early 20th-century urban square at the western end of Gran Vía, notable for its semicircular layout and civic monument to Miguel de Cervantes. The space combines formal paving, a shallow canal, tiled alcoves and a central sculptural group.

The central ensemble features the Cervantes monument with statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and wide open paved areas used for gatherings and events. A semicircular row of 52 tiled alcoves around the plaza celebrates Spain’s provinces with painted ceramic scenes and maps, and a shallow canal crossed by four symbolic bridges frames the lower edge of the square.

The plaza sits adjacent to parks and major avenues and functions as a starting point for walking routes west from the city centre; cafés and terraces face the square and provide views across the monument and canal. The combination of decorative tiles and open space makes it a common spot for photography and informal visits.

Commissioned in the early 20th century as part of urban redevelopment near Gran Vía, the plaza was completed between the late 1920s and 1930s and has undergone periodic restoration since. The monument to Cervantes was inaugurated in the late 1920s and has been the focal point of the square since its completion.

The plaza sits on the western edge of central Madrid, close to the Parque del Oeste and the Royal Palace, and is easily reached from Gran Vía and surrounding neighbourhoods.

  • Provincial benches: The plaza includes 52 provincial benches with decorative ceramic murals; they are popular spots for photos and for learning regional histories depicted in the tiles.
