Plaza de Cervantes

Plaza de Cervantes is the principal public square in the historic centre of Alcalá de Henares, Community of Madrid, and is named for the writer Miguel de Cervantes. The square sits at the heart of the town’s UNESCO World Heritage historic precinct.

The square is an open, rectangular plaza framed by arcaded facades and municipal buildings and features a central monument to Miguel de Cervantes. It functions as a civic focal point and is surrounded by cafes, shops, and visitor attractions including the nearby house-museum associated with Cervantes.

The plaza developed as the main urban square of Alcalá de Henares over several centuries as the town expanded from its medieval core into an important early modern university city. Its name and most of its cultural associations reflect the town’s link to Miguel de Cervantes and its long literary and academic heritage.

The square lies in the centre of Alcalá de Henares, about 35 km northeast of central Madrid, within the municipality’s historic district and within easy walking distance of the town’s cathedral and university buildings.
