Plaza de Armas (Cusco)
Square Central colonial square surrounded by historic churches
Cusco’s Plaza de Armas serves as the colonial heart with the cathedral and arcaded churches; visitors sit at cafés, watch street performers and join processions during religious festivals.
The Plaza de Armas of Cusco is the historic central square of Cusco city in southern Peru, laid out during the Spanish colonial period on the site of the Inca ceremonial plaza. The square has been the civic and religious heart of the city since the 16th century and sits within the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Cusco.
A broad, arcaded square framed by colonial buildings with restaurants, shops and tour offices. The plaza is dominated by a central fountain and is flanked by major churches and civic buildings, making it the primary starting point for walking the historic centre and nearby Inca sites.
The square is also a staging area for cultural events and parades; public celebrations, processions and markets frequently use the open space, so the plaza is lively throughout the day and particularly busy at sunset and during festivals.
The plaza was created after the Spanish conquest in the 1530s on top of the Inca plaza known as Huacaypata; Spanish authorities reorganized the urban fabric and built churches and administrative buildings around the open space. Over the colonial centuries the square acquired arcades, mansions and the major churches that stand today, reflecting successive architectural developments.
Found in the geographic centre of Cusco at roughly 3,400 metres above sea level, the Plaza de Armas sits inside the city’s historic core a short walk from most hotels and museums. It is the hub for local transport and the most common meeting point for accessing nearby archaeological sites.
- Inti Raymi and festivals: Timed events such as the annual Inti Raymi festival on June 24 fill the square and surrounding streets, making that date exceptionally crowded.
- Altitude warning: High altitude at about 3,400 metres requires acclimatization; take it easy on arrival and avoid strenuous activity the first day.
What to See #
- Cusco Cathedral: Sits on the north side of the square and was begun in the mid-16th century; the cathedral contains multiple gilded altars, colonial silverwork and a museum of religious art.
- La Compañía de Jesús: A Jesuit church facing the south side of the plaza, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, noted for its baroque facade and gilded interior altars.
