Platamon Castle

Platamon Castle is a medieval fortress on the Greek Aegean coast in Central Macedonia, sited above the coastal road and guarding access along the shoreline. The surviving masonry includes curtain walls, towers and an inner enclosure that date to the medieval period.

Walks around the ramparts provide open views across the Thermaic Gulf and the surrounding coastline, and the site is visually prominent from the nearby beach and road. The fortress is a frequent stop for visitors interested in medieval military architecture and coastal panoramas.

The castle dates chiefly from the medieval era and reflects successive phases of use and modification under different regional powers; it served as a defensive stronghold controlling the coastal approaches. In later centuries it fell into disuse and partial ruin, with conservation and archaeological attention in the modern period.

The fortress sits on a coastal slope near the town of Platamonas at the foot of Mount Olympus and overlooks the Aegean Sea, forming a landmark along the coastal corridor between Thessaloniki and Larissa.
