Plassenburg is a hilltop castle overlooking the town of Kulmbach in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, notable as a medieval fortress later adapted in the Renaissance period.
The complex contains museum displays, including a collection of tin figures and dioramas, historic fortifications and courtyards, and provides elevated views over Kulmbach. The castle fabric demonstrates medieval defensive structures alongside later architectural modifications.
Originally built in the Middle Ages, the site was substantially modified during the Renaissance when fortifications and residential elements were renewed; it has since been preserved and repurposed to house museum collections and exhibitions.
Plassenburg sits on a prominent hill immediately above the town of Kulmbach in northern Bavaria, within the Franconian region of Germany.

How to Get to Plassenburg #
Plassenburg sits above Kulmbach in Upper Franconia. From Kulmbach train station (served by regional DB trains), it is a 10-15 minute walk uphill to Schlossberg 1; follow signs for the castle/”Plassenburg.” Drivers take B85 into Kulmbach and then Schlossberg; limited parking is available at the base of the hill.
Tips for Visiting Plassenburg #
- Enter through the Schlossberg pedestrian path to avoid the steep north-side road and get the best first view of the three-towered silhouette.
- Head to the armoury room early-photography is allowed but light is low and fragile exhibits are crowded later in the afternoon.
- Combine the visit with Kulmbach's Weißwurst breakfast or a brewery tour - the town's beer museums are 10-15 minutes on foot from the castle.
