Plansee is a mountain lake in the Tyrol region of Austria, noted for clear water and an alpine shoreline. It is one of the principal lakes in the Reutte district and is used for recreational boating and angling.
The lake’s long shoreline and open waters make it a focal point for local tourism, including boat rentals and walking paths. Facilities and small settlements sit along its shores, serving visitors and local lakeside activities.
The lake formed in glacially sculpted terrain and has been a mapped feature of the Tyrolean landscape for centuries; modern visitor infrastructure developed in the 19th and 20th centuries as alpine tourism expanded. Water-level management and access roads increased recreational use in the 20th century.
Geographically Plansee lies in western Tyrol near the town of Reutte, not far from the Austrian-German border, set in a mountainous valley with nearby passes that link to Bavarian lands.

How to Get to Plansee #
Plansee is a lake in the Außerfern region of Tyrol near the market town of Reutte. The lake is reached by road from Reutte: follow the B179 (Fernpassstraße) toward the lake and park at the marked parking/turnouts by the lake access points; the drive from Reutte is about 10 km. Regional buses from Reutte serve the surrounding area (check local timetables), and trails around the lake begin from the parking areas.
Tips for Visiting Plansee #
- Visit at first light for glassy water and reflections of the surrounding peaks - mornings are usually the calmest on alpine lakes.
- Plan your visit outside the peak summer weekends or early/late in the day to find quieter stretches of shoreline; the lake is much busier midday in high season.
- Walk sections of the lakeside trail toward the adjoining Heiterwanger See to spread out from the main parking areas and find less frequented viewpoints.
