Main image

Planica is a ski jumping and ski flying complex in the Planica valley in the Municipality of Kranjska Gora in northwestern Slovenia, noted for one of the world’s premier ski flying hills. The venue is a central location in international ski flying and Nordic competitions.

The site includes a full-scale ski flying hill and several smaller jumping hills used for World Cup events, national competitions and summer training. Large spectator stands and terraces give close views of jumpers in the inrun, takeoff and landing areas, and jumps regularly exceed 200 metres. The Nordic Centre around the hills provides exhibition space and event facilities used during major competition weekends.

Development of Planica as a jumping centre began in the 20th century and expanded over decades into a purpose-built ski flying venue. The signature ski flying hill was engineered by the Gorišek brothers in the 20th century and the complex has hosted multiple World Cup rounds and ski flying championships since then.

The valley sits near the village of Rateče in the far northwest of Slovenia, close to the borders with Italy and Austria and roughly 100 kilometres northwest of Ljubljana. The site is reached by road from Kranjska Gora and neighbouring Alpine valleys.

  • Best time to visit: Competition weekends in late winter and early spring draw the largest crowds; many of the sport's longest jumps exceed 200 metres.
  • Visitor facilities: The site combines a ski-flying hill with a dedicated Nordic Centre, offering museum exhibits and spectator terraces close to the takeoff area.

What to See #

  • Letalnica bratov Gorišek: The main ski flying hill built in the Planica valley, famous for very long jumps and large spectator stands; it is the focal point for international ski flying competitions.
  • Planica Nordic Centre: The Nordic Centre complex surrounding the hills, with exhibition spaces, trails and event infrastructure used for World Cup and championship weekends.
  • Smaller jumping hills and training areas: A group of smaller ski-jumping hills and training slopes clustered around the valley used for national competitions and summer training.

Planica is in the northwestern Julian Alps near Kranjska Gora. By car it’s roughly 1-1.5 hours northwest of Ljubljana (around 90-110 km depending on route) via the A2/E61 toward Jesenice and local roads into the Planica valley. The nearest rail hub is Jesenice; from there regular regional buses run to Kranjska Gora/Rateče and during events shuttle buses run to the Planica Nordic Centre-expect a short taxi or local-bus ride of a few kilometres from Kranjska Gora to the venue, with a short walk from the event drop-off to the jumping hills.

Tips for Visiting Planica #

  • If you want the full atmosphere of ski flying, plan your visit for the end-of-season World Cup events (usually late March); expect large crowds and book transport/parking well in advance.
  • To avoid the event crowds, visit on a weekday outside competition periods and go early morning when parking in the Planica valley (access from Rateče/Kranjska Gora) is easiest and trails are quiet.
  • Most day visitors concentrate on the jumping stadium; take a short walk around the valley paths above the complex for quieter viewpoints and broader views of the surrounding mountains.
