Place Saint-Michel is a public square on the Left Bank of the Seine in central Paris, adjacent to the Latin Quarter and close to Île de la Cité. It is known for the prominent Fontaine Saint-Michel, installed in the mid-19th century.
The square serves as a gateway between the Latin Quarter and the riverfront, with the fountain as its focal point and busy pedestrian routes into nearby bookshops, cafés, and the Sorbonne area. The location is well served by RER and metro connections and is a common meeting point.
The fountain and much of the square were reshaped during Baron Haussmann’s renovation of Paris in the 19th century; the Fontaine Saint-Michel was executed as a public monument of that period. The surrounding streets and buildings evolved as part of the academic and commercial life of the Left Bank.
