Freshwater cave pool on Upolu, Samoa; visitors swim, picnic and reach the sheltered pool by a short walk from the coastal road.
Piula Cave Pool is a spring-fed freshwater pool set in a limestone cave on the north-east coast of Upolu island, Samoa, located on the grounds of Piula Theological College in the village of Lufilufi. The pool is a local natural attraction used for swimming and cooling off.
A clear, sheltered pool sits immediately inside a limestone overhang and is fed by an underground spring; the setting offers shaded swimming and a short riverside approach from the college grounds. The site is compact and generally visited for short recreational swims rather than extensive recreation facilities.
The pool and the college grounds have long been part of the local community; Piula Theological College and its grounds are associated with the Methodist mission presence in Samoa. The pool has been used historically by students and local residents and is a recognized local swimming spot.
The cave pool lies on Upolu’s northeast coast in Lufilufi, roughly a 20-30 kilometre drive east from the capital, Apia, depending on route and traffic.
