Pisa Cathedral
Church Medieval cathedral in Pisa's Campo dei Miracoli complex
Pisa’s cathedral on the Piazza dei Miracoli features a marble Romanesque façade and ornate interior; tourists combine cathedral visits with the nearby Leaning Tower, baptistery and Camposanto.
Pisa Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa) is the Romanesque cathedral at the heart of Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli, built beginning in 1063 as the seat of the archbishop and consecrated in the early 12th century. It is a principal example of Pisan Romanesque architecture.
The cathedral’s exterior features tiered marble arcades and a sculpted façade that faces the square; the interior is a spacious basilica plan with a nave, aisles and an elevated mosaic-decorated apse. Architectural and decorative elements include marble inlays, mosaic panels in the apse and richly carved stonework in chapels and portals.
The cathedral is frequently visited together with the adjacent Baptistery and the famous freestanding campanile, the Leaning Tower, which together form the Piazza dei Miracoli ensemble that draws most visitors to the site.
Constructed in the 11th century as part of Pisa’s maritime republic-era building program, the cathedral was expanded and decorated over subsequent centuries, reflecting the city’s wealth and artistic connections. It has undergone restorations to address structural concerns and preserve mosaics and stonework.
Sited in the Piazza dei Miracoli on the northern edge of Pisa’s historic center, the cathedral is immediately adjacent to the Baptistery and the campanile and is a short walk from the city’s railway station.
- Date and setting: Construction began in 1063 and the cathedral was consecrated in the early 12th century; it forms the central building of the Piazza dei Miracoli UNESCO site alongside the Baptistery and the Campanile.
How to Get to Pisa Cathedral #
Pisa Cathedral (Duomo) is in Piazza dei Miracoli in central Pisa. From Pisa Centrale railway station it is about a 20-25 minute walk (roughly 1.5-2 km) west along Via Roma and then into the piazza; local city buses also run between the station and the Piazza dei Miracoli area. Signage in town directs visitors to the cathedral and Leaning Tower.
By car, Pisa is commonly reached from Florence in about 1-1.5 hours (approximately 80-90 km) via the A11/A12 motorways; parking is available near the Piazza dei Miracoli but can be limited during peak times.
Tips for Visiting Pisa Cathedral #
- Visit the cathedral in the earliest time slots or late afternoon to see the interior with far fewer people than the peak midday tourist surge around the Leaning Tower.
- If you plan to climb the Leaning Tower, book that separate time-slot in advance and schedule the cathedral visit for a quieter time before or after your tower slot.
- Take a moment in the apse to view the large mosaic of Christ Pantocrator and look for the carved medieval pulpit and other sculptural details-these are often missed by visitors rushing between monuments.
Best Time to Visit Pisa Cathedral #
Best early morning or late afternoon in shoulder seasons to avoid the largest tourist crowds in the square.
