Pirene (fountain)
Archaeological Site Ancient Peloponnesian fountain associated with Greek mythology
Overview The Pirene fountain is an ancient spring and stone fountain located at the foot of the Acrocorinth in the Peloponnese, Greece. It is one of the traditional water sources mentioned in classical accounts of Corinth.
What visitors find A rock-cut spring chamber and stone basins mark the site, set against the slopes below the Acrocorinth fortress. The surviving masonry and carved features reflect long use as an urban water source rather than a decorative modern fountain.
History The spring is associated with the mythic figure Pirene and was noted by ancient authors as a principal water supply for ancient Corinth. It remained a valued local water source through classical and later periods and sits close to the archaeological remains of the ancient city.
Location The fountain lies on the lower slopes of the Acrocorinth, immediately adjacent to the archaeological area of ancient Corinth and the modern town of Corinth.
