Main image

Piperi is a small, uninhabited islet in the Northern Sporades of the Aegean Sea, administratively part of Thessaly, Greece. It lies within the Alonnisos Northern Sporades National Marine Park and is recognised for its strict conservation status.

There are no visitor facilities on the islet and public landings are normally not allowed because the area is managed for habitat protection. Tour boats from nearby inhabited islands offer circumnavigation views of Piperi, where passengers can observe cliffs, seabird colonies and marine life from the water.

The islet has long been largely uninhabited and acquired its present status when the surrounding marine park was established to protect coastal and marine habitats. Management since the park’s creation has focused on restricting access and limiting disturbance to wildlife.

Piperi sits in the Northern Sporades archipelago off the east coast of mainland Greece, close to the island of Alonnisos, and is part of the protected core zone of the Alonnisos Northern Sporades National Marine Park.

  • Access restrictions: Landing on the island is generally prohibited or highly restricted because it lies in the core zone of the Alonnisos Northern Sporades National Marine Park.
  • Wildlife importance: Visible from tour boats that operate from nearby inhabited islands; the island is an important breeding and resting site for seabirds and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
