Pincian Hill, known in Italian as the Pincio, is a landscaped hill and terrace overlooking Piazza del Popolo and the northern edge of Rome’s historic centre. The current terraces and promenades date largely to early 19th-century redesigns that created formal avenues and viewpoints.
The hill features broad viewing terraces, tree-lined promenades and ornamental statues arranged along avenues, forming a popular public garden adjacent to Villa Borghese. The Pincian terrace offers clear sightlines across the historic skyline toward St. Peter’s Basilica and central Rome.
The hill was remodelled in the early 1800s under the direction of urban planners who shaped the promenades and planted the park’s avenues; it has since functioned as a public promenade and civic green space. Subsequent additions included pathways, statuary and ornamental planting.
Geographically the Pincian Hill sits immediately north of the historic centre of Rome, above Piazza del Popolo and adjacent to the Villa Borghese gardens.
