Pikimachay
Cave Prehistoric cave site with early human occupation evidence
Rock shelter in Ayacucho with archaeological deposits documenting early human occupation in the Andes; attracts archaeologists and visitors interested in South American prehistory.
Pikimachay is an archaeological rock-shelter and cave site in the Ayacucho region of Peru known for stratified cultural deposits spanning late Pleistocene and Holocene periods. It is important for studies of early human presence in the Andean highlands.
The site consists of a sheltered rock overhang and associated excavated deposits where archaeologists have documented stone tools, hearths and faunal remains. Interpretive attention focuses on the site’s stratigraphy and the sequence of human activity preserved in its layers.
Excavations in the mid-20th century established the site as an important locality for understanding early highland occupation in Peru; findings have been discussed in debates over the timing and nature of early human settlement in the Andes. Research has continued to refine dates and cultural associations for the deposits.
Pikimachay lies in the Ayacucho highland province of Peru, inland from the coastal region and set within the Andean uplands of the Department of Ayacucho.
- Stratified deposits: The site contains deep stratified deposits that have yielded stone tools and faunal remains used in research on human occupation in the high Andes.
