Wari-period archaeological complex east of Cusco with extensive adobe enclosures, plazas and drainage works; visited for pre-Inca history and guided site tours.
Pikillaqta is a large pre-Inca archaeological site in the Cusco region of Peru, located on the plains southeast of the city of Cusco. It represents an extensive planned settlement with a rectilinear street layout.
The site consists of a grid of streets, plazas and hundreds of rectangular enclosures and building foundations that cover a substantial area; the layout indicates organized urban planning and large-scale storage or administrative use. Walkways allow visitors to view the network of walls, streets and public spaces that characterize the settlement.
Pikillaqta is attributed to the Wari (Huari) cultural horizon and served as a regional administrative and ceremonial centre prior to the rise of the Inca, reflecting centralized planning and control. Excavations and studies have shown phased construction and long-term occupation before the Inca expansion.
Situated on the southern coastal plain of the Cusco region, the site lies roughly 20-30 kilometres southeast of Cusco city and is reached by regional roads through the valley area.
