Pico Ruivo
Mountain Madeira's highest peak with panoramic hiking trails
Madeira’s Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest peak, rewards hikers with ridge trails and pan‑island views. Visitors come for steep, well‑marked hikes from Pico do Arieiro, cloud‑line scenery and sunrise or sunset on volcanic landscapes.
Pico Ruivo is the highest point on the island of Madeira, rising to an elevation of 1,862 metres. It is a major destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts because of its summit views and alpine-like ridgelines.
Key experiences include short steep paths to the summit viewpoint and longer ridge hikes that connect Pico Ruivo to neighbouring peaks such as Pico do Arieiro; the landscape includes rocky summits and laurel forest lower down. The summit offers panoramic views over the island and the Atlantic on clear days.
The peak is reached by marked trails and is often combined with visits to nearby mountain access points and viewpoints; weather can change rapidly at altitude so appropriate clothing and footwear are advised.
Pico Ruivo sits in the central massif of Madeira, within the island’s mountainous interior, and is accessed by mountain roads and trailheads that are a drive of under two hours from the regional capital.
- Arieiro-Ruivo trail: The ridge trail from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is a challenging mountain route of about 7 km one-way and is popular with experienced hikers for sunrise and sunset outings.
How to Get to Pico Ruivo #
Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak on the main island, is reached on foot from established trailheads or by driving to nearby parking areas. The two main trail access points are Pico do Arieiro (for the Arieiro→Ruivo ridge hike) and Achada do Teixeira (a shorter trailhead toward Pico Ruivo). From Funchal allow roughly 40-60 minutes by car to reach the central highland trailheads; from each trailhead there is a marked walk of varying length and difficulty to the summit (Achada do Teixeira is the shorter approach).
Tips for Visiting Pico Ruivo #
- Start very early from Achada do Teixeira or Pico do Arieiro if youre hiking, both are common trailheads-early starts reduce cloud cover and allow clear summit views.
- Check weather forecasts carefully: Pico Ruivo often sits in cloud and conditions can change rapidly, so clear mornings give the best chance of panoramic views.
- Many visitors hike only part of the main routes; if you have time, continue the ridge walks to quieter summits for broader views and fewer people.
Best Time to Visit Pico Ruivo #
Best hiked from late spring through early autumn for stable weather and clear summit views; expect cooler, often changeable conditions at the top year-round.
