Pichincha (volcano)
Mountain Active volcano overlooking Quito, popular for hiking
Lofting above Quito, Volcano Pichincha includes Rucu and Guagua Pichincha peaks and a TelefériQo cable car up its eastern slopes. Hikers use trailheads near Quito for day climbs and panoramic city views.
Pichincha is a complex stratovolcano immediately west of Quito in Pichincha Province, Ecuador, composed of several peaks including the commonly climbed Rucu Pichincha and the higher Guagua Pichincha. It forms a dominant part of the skyline above Quito and is both a recreational hiking area and an active volcanic system.
Trails of varying difficulty lead to the Rucu summit from the ridge reached by the TelefériQo cable car, while Guagua Pichincha is steeper and has produced recorded eruptions in the modern era, most recently causing ash falls that affected Quito in 1999. Hikers use established routes and mountain guides; weather and altitude can make ascents demanding.
The volcanic complex formed through repeated eruptive phases; the two main peaks are typical stratovolcanic cones with rugged flanks and crater structures. Guagua Pichincha’s historical activity has prompted monitoring by Ecuadorian geological services.
Pichincha rises directly above the city of Quito, with trailheads and the TelefériQo on the metropolitan western slopes; the area combines urban fringe and high-Andean terrain with panoramic views over the capital.
- Access and acclimatisation: A cable car (TelefériQo) from Quito provides rapid access to high-altitude trailheads and is commonly used to start ascents of Rucu Pichincha; acclimatise before attempting full climbs.
What to See #
- Rucu Pichincha: Rucu Pichincha - the lower, more frequently climbed peak with established hiking routes that start from the TelefériQo ridge; offers direct views down into Quito.
- Guagua Pichincha: Guagua Pichincha - a higher, more rugged summit that has produced recorded eruptive activity in the late 20th century and is monitored for volcanic unrest.
How to Get to Pichincha (volcano) #
Pichincha’s common access point is from Quito. Take the TelefériQo (cable car) from the eastern edge of Quito to the Cruz Loma area (the station is at Avenida Padre Carlos Crespi). From Cruz Loma hikers continue on marked high-altitude trails; guided ascents and local hiking companies operate from Quito.
