The massif comprises several summits that are commonly climbed together on summer routes; approaches from the Catalan valleys are the most frequently used. The area is within high-mountain terrain of the Pyrenees and is popular with hikers and mountaineers during the climbing season.

The mountain sits on the international frontier in the Montcalm Massif and provides alpine views characteristic of the central Pyrenees.

How to Get to Pica d'Estats #

Access is by mountain roads from towns such as Llavorsí or Alins (Catalonia) and Les (France). The nearest practical base for most ascents on the Catalan side is around Alins; expect a drive on narrow mountain roads followed by a day or more on foot.

Tips for Visiting Pica d'Estats #

  • If attempting the summit route, spend a night at a nearby refuge (Refugi de Certascan or similar bases) to break the ascent.
  • Summer routes are rocky and exposed-start early for stable weather and to avoid afternoon storms.
