Piazza Venezia
Square Central Rome square at Capitoline and historic routes
At the crossroads of Rome, Piazza Venezia sits beside the Vittoriano and near the Roman Forum and Via dei Fori Imperiali. Visitors pass through for monuments, transport links and cafés spilling onto its broad pavement.
Piazza Venezia is a major city square in central Rome, Italy, situated at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and named for the adjacent Palazzo Venezia. It is a central traffic junction and a focal point for several of Rome’s main streets.
The square is dominated by the large white monument to Italy’s first king on one side and the historic Palazzo Venezia on another, with busy roads such as Via del Corso and Via dei Fori Imperiali radiating out. It functions as a key meeting and transit point for access to nearby sites including the Roman Forum and the Capitoline museums.
The area around the piazza developed over centuries; Palazzo Venezia dates to the late medieval and Renaissance period and the large national monument was erected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to commemorate Victor Emmanuel II. In the 20th century the piazza also became known for political events and public addresses held from the palace facade.
Geographically the square sits in the historic core of Rome, within walking distance of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum and a short distance from the Tiber River. It occupies a central position between the Capitoline Hill and the modern commercial axis of the city.
- Transport hub: Located at the meeting point of several major thoroughfares including Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via del Corso, making it a primary traffic and transit hub in central Rome.
- Best viewpoint: A good vantage point for viewing the immediate area is the terrace of the Vittoriano, which provides panoramic views over the Capitoline Hill and the Roman Forum.
What to See #
- Palazzo Venezia: A Renaissance and medieval palace that faces the square and today houses museum spaces and diplomatic offices; its 15th-century origins link it closely to the piazza's name.
- Altare della Patria (Vittoriano): A large white marble national monument dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II that dominates the square's eastern side and offers wide stone terraces and views over central Rome.
