piazza Grande
Plaza Historic central square in Modena, UNESCO site
Modena’s Piazza Grande forms the medieval core beside the cathedral and civic palace; visitors come for Romanesque architecture, open‑air markets and UNESCO‑listed heritage.
Piazza Grande is the principal medieval square in the historic centre of Modena, northern Italy, and forms a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble with the adjacent cathedral and civic tower. The site’s outstanding Romanesque architecture dates principally to the 11th and 12th centuries.
The square is dominated by the Modena Cathedral, whose construction began around 1099 and whose façade and sculptures are major Romanesque works. The adjacent Torre della Ghirlandina marks the skyline and the Palazzo Comunale frames the long rectangular piazza used historically for civic events and markets.
The cathedral and its sculptural program were created in the 11th-12th centuries by master builders and sculptors including Lanfranco and Wiligelmo. The civic tower and surrounding civic buildings developed in the medieval and later periods, with the whole ensemble preserved as an example of medieval urban planning.
Piazza Grande sits in the historic centre of Modena, Emilia-Romagna, surrounded by the city’s principal medieval buildings.
- UNESCO inscription: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as an ensemble comprising the cathedral, the civic tower and Piazza Grande.

How to Get to piazza Grande #
Piazza Grande is the main square in Modena’s historic centre. From Modena railway station (Modena FS) it is an easy 10-15 minute walk (roughly 800-1,000 m) west into the old town. By car Modena is about 40 km northwest of Bologna via the A1 motorway (drive time roughly 30-45 minutes depending on traffic); follow signs for the historic centre and park at one of the central parking garages then walk to the square.
Tips for Visiting piazza Grande #
- Go early morning for softer light on the cathedral façade and Ghirlandina tower - mornings are quieter, which makes it easier to take in the Romanesque details and the square's proportions.
- If you want the panoramic view, check opening times and buy a combined ticket to climb the Ghirlandina tower; many visitors admire the piazza from ground level and miss the tower's vantage point over Modena.
- Take time to view the cathedral museum (Museo della Cattedrale) which houses many original sculptures and reliefs from the piazza - people often focus on the exterior and skip these interior displays.
