Piazza Farnese
Plaza Historic Roman square dominated by Palazzo Farnese façade
A Rome square facing Palazzo Farnese, Piazza Farnese presents Renaissance façades, twin fountains and stone benches. Visitors pause here en route between Campo de’ Fiori, the Tiber and diplomatic buildings.
Piazza Farnese is a Renaissance square in central Rome dominated by the façade of the 16th-century Palazzo Farnese. The piazza is noted for its large granite basins brought from ancient Roman baths.
The square presents a broad, open forecourt framed by the Palazzo Farnese and adjacent palaces, with two large circular granite basins serving as its visual anchors. Cafes and offices occupy the surrounding buildings and the area is frequently used for official and diplomatic activity.
The piazza took shape in the 16th century during the construction and expansion of Palazzo Farnese, a major Farnese family residence. The two granite basins were relocated from the Baths of Caracalla and placed in the square as decorative fountains during the Renaissance.
Located in the Regola rione of central Rome, Piazza Farnese sits a short walk west of Campo de’ Fiori and south of the Tiber River. It is in the historic core of the city within easy walking distance of other central sites.
- Best viewpoint: The best view of the square is from the steps in front of the Palazzo Farnese, where the twin granite basins and the palace facade align.
What to See #
- Palazzo Farnese: Sixteenth-century papal palace whose large Renaissance façade dominates the square; the building houses the French Embassy in Rome.
- Granite basins from the Baths of Caracalla: Two large granite basins taken from the Baths of Caracalla that serve as the square's fountains and focal points; they are placed symmetrically in front of the palace.
How to Get to Piazza Farnese #
Piazza Farnese is in the historic centre of Rome, directly across from Palazzo Farnese and a very short walk (2-3 minutes) from Campo de’ Fiori.
From Roma Termini it’s roughly a 20-25 minute walk or a short taxi/bus ride into the central district; the square is fully pedestrian and best reached on foot from nearby central sites.
Tips for Visiting Piazza Farnese #
- See Piazza Farnese at dawn or in the evening for photographs with softer light and far fewer tourists, so you can properly appreciate the Palazzo Farnese façade and the twin granite basins in the square.
- Remember that Palazzo Farnese houses the French embassy and is usually closed to unscheduled visits; if you want an interior visit, check the French embassy's public‑visit programs in advance for rare openings or guided tours.
- Pause to look closely at the two large Roman granite basins (from the Baths of Caracalla) set in the piazza - they are a focal point many passersby glance over while admiring the palace.
