Piazza delle Erbe, Verona

Piazza delle Erbe is Verona’s historic market square and occupies the site of the city’s ancient Roman forum in the heart of the historic centre. It is lined by historic palaces, merchant houses and a mix of cafes and market stalls.

Principal features include a central fountain often referred to as the Madonna Verona, the medieval Torre dei Lamberti which provides panoramic views from its observation platform, and Baroque and Renaissance facades such as Palazzo Maffei. The square functions today as both a tourist attraction and a daily market place for locals.

The piazza’s long history as Verona’s commercial and civic heart is visible in the layered architecture and surviving medieval street plan. It remains one of the city’s most visited public spaces.
