Piazza del Campidoglio

Piazza del Campidoglio is the civic square on Rome’s Capitoline Hill redesigned in the mid-16th century to create a formal urban ensemble. Michelangelo produced the architectural scheme that reorganised the hilltop and the surrounding palaces into a single coherent square.

The piazza is paved with a star-pattern design and is centred on an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius - the original statue is conserved inside the Capitoline Museums while a replica stands outdoors. Three principal buildings frame the square, housing municipal offices and the Capitoline Museums’ collections.

The Campidoglio overlooks the Roman Forum and provides one of the classic viewpoints across ancient Rome; the site functions as both a museum complex and a seat of municipal government.

• Design and designer: The square was redesigned by Michelangelo in the 1530s-1540s and is notable for its trapezoidal layout and patterned pavement that focuses on the equestrian statue.
• Position and views: It sits atop the Capitoline Hill with views down toward the Roman Forum and is the location of the Capitoline Museums housed in the palaces around the square.

• Palazzo Senatorio: The municipal palace that serves as Rome's city hall and fronts the square, featuring a medieval core with later alterations.
• Palazzo dei Conservatori: One of the pair of palaces flanking the square that now houses part of the Capitoline Museums, built in the 16th century and restored to display antiquities and Renaissance works.
• Palazzo Nuovo: The matching palace opposite the Conservatori, completed later to mirror Michelangelo's plan and also part of the Capitoline Museums complex.
• Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius: An ancient bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius - the original is kept inside the Capitoline Museums and a replica stands in the square.
