Piazza Bellini, Naples

Piazza Bellini is a small public square in Naples’ historic centre near the university and conservatory, known for visible archaeological remains and a dense concentration of cafes. The piazza is named after the 19th-century composer Vincenzo Bellini.

The square is compact and primarily known for its open-air cafes and bars that draw a student crowd in the evenings. Sections of exposed ancient masonry and foundations are visible in the pavement, providing a direct link to Naples’ Greek and Roman past. The surrounding streets contain music schools and university buildings, making the piazza a convenient base for exploring the nearby historic centre.

The area was part of Naples’ layered urban fabric from antiquity onward; excavations in the 20th century revealed Hellenistic and Roman masonry that was left visible when the modern square was arranged. The current social character developed in the 20th and 21st centuries as university life and nightlife centred around the piazza.

The square sits in central Naples within walking distance of Via Mezzocannone and the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, in Campania’s dense historic core. It is a short walk from Naples’ main university buildings and the National Archaeological Museum.
