Pianosa

Pianosa is a small, low-lying island in the Tuscan Archipelago off the west coast of Italy, noteworthy for its very flat terrain. For much of the 20th century the island was used as a penal colony, and several prison-era buildings and settlements remain.

Today the island is included in the Tuscan Archipelago park framework and visits are controlled; the coast and surrounding waters are valued for their marine life and clear waters. Visitors typically come by organised boat tours that focus on the island’s coastal scenery and limited cultural sites.

The island’s recent history is dominated by its use as a detention site, which shaped settlement patterns and infrastructure; since the closure of the prison facilities the island’s role has shifted toward conservation and regulated tourism.

Pianosa lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea within the Tuscan Archipelago, west of the Tuscan coast and near the island of Elba.
