Pianosa
Island Tiny Tuscan island formerly a prison, now protected
A flat island in the Tuscan Archipelago, Pianosa served as a penal colony in the 20th century and now attracts day-trippers for clear waters, snorkeling, cycling and boat trips from Elba.
Pianosa is a small, low-lying island in the Tuscan Archipelago off the west coast of Italy, noteworthy for its very flat terrain. For much of the 20th century the island was used as a penal colony, and several prison-era buildings and settlements remain.
Today the island is included in the Tuscan Archipelago park framework and visits are controlled; the coast and surrounding waters are valued for their marine life and clear waters. Visitors typically come by organised boat tours that focus on the island’s coastal scenery and limited cultural sites.
The island’s recent history is dominated by its use as a detention site, which shaped settlement patterns and infrastructure; since the closure of the prison facilities the island’s role has shifted toward conservation and regulated tourism.
Pianosa lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea within the Tuscan Archipelago, west of the Tuscan coast and near the island of Elba.
- Flat topography: The island is notably flat compared with its neighbouring islands, a characteristic reflected in its Italian name which means 'flat island'.
- Restricted access: Formerly used as a high-security prison island in the 20th century, it is now part of the Tuscan Archipelago and access is regulated with limited visitor numbers.
What to See #
- Penal colony area: The former prison complex and administrative buildings that were used when the island served as a penal colony; some structures remain visible though access is controlled.
- Marine and coastal areas: Coastal coves and marine areas which are now part of the surrounding protected marine environment and attract limited visitor excursions and snorkeling trips.
Tips for Visiting Pianosa #
- Book landing slots or an organized day-trip in advance through authorized tour operators-Pianosa's visitor numbers and access are controlled as part of the Tuscan Archipelago protections, so spots can be limited in summer.
- Plan to arrive with a clear itinerary: most authorized excursions combine short island walks with time for snorkeling and guided history talks (Pianosa's penal-colony history and restricted-access areas are covered on official tours).
- Check the national park or tour operator information beforehand for seasonal restrictions and any closure notices-unplanned closures are possible for conservation reasons, and operators will advise on permitted landing sites.
