Philippi
Archaeological Site Ancient Macedonian city and archaeological site with ruins
Ancient site near Kavala with Roman-era ruins, an early Christian basilica and a theatre; site of the 42 BC Battle of Philippi. Visitors study the archaeology and walk excavated streets.
Philippi is an ancient city and archaeological site in eastern Macedonia, northern Greece, refounded and expanded under Macedonian and later Roman control and notable for its links to Roman history and early Christianity.
The site contains a substantial Roman forum, a large Hellenistic-Roman theatre, remains of public baths, and at least two early Christian basilicas. The theatre’s seating and the layout of the forum are among the most complete visible features, and substantial stretches of the city walls and an acropolis survive. Visitors also see excavated streets, tombs and fragmentary domestic buildings that illustrate urban life.
Philippi was originally founded as the settlement of Crenides by Thasian settlers in the 4th century BC and was captured and expanded by Philip II of Macedon in the mid 4th century BC. After the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC the settlement received Roman colonists and developed as a Roman city; it later served as an important early Christian centre visited by the Apostle Paul in the mid 1st century AD.
The ruins lie in eastern Macedonia, near the modern town of Krinides, on the plain northeast of the present city of Kavala. The site sits inland from the northern edge of the Aegean coast and is accessible from regional roads and nearby towns.
- Best viewing points: Well-preserved stonework and mosaics survive in places, making the theatre and basilicas the best spots for photography and inspection of construction techniques.
- Complementary museum visit: Pairs with a visit to a local museum displaying finds from the site for context on inscriptions, coins and pottery recovered during excavations.
What to See #
- Site core (forum, streets and baths): A large archaeological complex with visible remains from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods including city walls, public buildings and burial areas.
- Theatre: A near-intact stone theatre originally built in the Hellenistic period and modified in Roman times, with seating and stage area still visible.
- Basilicas and Christian complex: Two early Christian basilicas and associated Christian-era buildings dating to the Late Antique period, showing the site's early Christian community.
- Acropolis and walls: A fortified acropolis and surviving sections of ancient city walls that mark the original urban footprint and defensive works.
